The next day your house will be 6x6 squares big which will cost you 148,980 bells.
Go to tom nook and he will ask you if you want a basement or a bigger room ALWAYS GO FOR THE BASEMENT.
When that's paid off your house will have a 8x8 size room downstairs which will cost you 47,500 bells.
When you pay that off your room will be expanded to 8x8 and will cost you 398,000(I know it's a little pricey).
The final expansion will add a 6x6 room upstairs but will cost you 798,000(very expensive I know).
Now, I'm sure your asking "What do i get for paying all of that money (1,410,200 bells)?" Well you get a statue of yourself(Gold for being the first to pay it off, silver for being the second to pay it off etc etc)and a bank account for spare money.
